Kalisizo Hospital
Kalisizo hospital is a busy rural health unit serving all the medical needs of the communities in the surrounding area. Kalisizo was the epicentre of the original AIDS outbreak in Uganda and the legacy of this continues to impact families, individuals and the community as a whole. MUK students spend time attached at the hospital while they are living in the town as part of their community-based learning experience with Brighter Smiles. When the UBC team is in Kalisizo they spend time at the hospital where they conduct teaching sessions, and do rounds on the wards.

During one round the team was on the obstetric ward when they noticed that some of the beds were of Canadian design. The nursing sister in charge said that they had been donated by a Rotary club from Canada, and pointing out of the window to a construction area said the hospital urgently needed 50 more for their new obstetric ward! Less than a year later, after successful enquires made by team members using their Rotary contacts, two 2 shipping containers arrived in Kalisizo with the beds requested and other much needed medical equipment including X ray, ultrasound, and dental examination chairs.

The obstetric ward has now opened, and in recognition of the equipment donated has been named the Rotary club of Calgary obstetric ward. This is one of several examples of the unexpected impact and benefits the Brighter Smiles Africa program is able to bring to communities, and illustrates the positive influence effective collaboration between agencies can have on projects to improve health education and health care delivery.
